2006 Rattlers Round Robins full of surprises!

No, there was no surprise in the fact that registration was closed a few days before the deadline. With 90 entries in our last two tournaments, we knew that the 72 spaces allowed by the RR formula would fill up quickly. We also suspected that our club secretary could win his event if we bribed his opponents enough.

The first surprise came in the U-1400 event, which was won by a junior who entered the tournament with a 608 rating. Perfect answer to my recent griping about the absence of young talent in our tournaments. Well done, Jason, but I want to know what you had for breakfast on Sunday morning. Then we had a woman as winner of the Open. All right, she comes from China, has international experience, and didn’t have to face our usual over-2500 players, who were conspicuous by their absence. But still, there were a few locals like Desmond who saw their chance to win their first Open. They all gave her a hard time, but ultimately bowed to experience and ball control. Welcome Junya; it’s nice to see a new face among our elite and we are eager to see you challenge the rest of the gang.

The tournament was ran as a succession of round robins (three rounds of 3 or 4 players)

Winners of 22 cash prizes were as follows:

OPEN

A1 Winner: Jun Ya Chen ($200); 2nd Desmond Wilson; 3rd Chandru Krishnan

A2 Danny Ly; A3 Marius Kulesza; B1 Zedplin Law; B2 Ali Parsa; B3 Grant Lee; C1 Dicken Tai; C2 Stjepan Kerosevic; C3 Everton Wilson.
