Scavenger Hunt Rules
and
the 2007 hunt

( as an example)

 Rules
*** Items to 'find' will be added to this list for six weeks. Randomly, several extra credit items will be added.
*** Items will generally be in the form of a question.  Answers will be 'found' somewhere online.  Some questions will include hints;  others will require some detective work!
*** Find as many of them as you are able.
*** You will have approx. 10 days after the last item has been listed here to finish looking and submit them.
*** Type them in a list in an email and send to thevioletvoice@yahoo.com by the deadline.
*** Prizes will be awarded and announced ASAP after that date.
Below are the 2007 Scavenger Hunt Items
Questions/Hints
&
Answers/Items
  • Item #1 -- (corrected 8/6) African Violet Society of America and African Violet Society of Canada both maintain lists of AV vendors who are 'commercial affiliates'.  This item will contain TWO answers, consisting of three state names: Which two USA states are home to the most vendors on the AVSA listing, AND which USA state is home to the most vendors on the AVSC listing?
  •  Answer:  USA: New York, California CANADA: New York
  • Item #2 --  In our special Newbie Nook section, you will find an article by Nancy, in which she relates an experience with a plant she purchased without a label.  What was the variety name she briefly assigned to the plant?
  •  Answer: Melodie Kimi
  • Item #3 --  Find a gesneriad reference webpage (not part of VV -- try a web search).  In the 'Articles' section, find the two words to fill these blanks:
'African violets have two chief habits of growth, and are classified as either
     ______ or ______.'
  •  Answer:  rosettes or trailers
  • Item #4 -- quote from an article: "Flowers having only 5 petals are called "single".  "Double" refers to flowers with 10 or more petals (i.e. two or more full sets of five).  We call a flower "semidouble" when there are from 6 to 9 petals.  Often the number of petals will change because of many different reasons, either genetic or cultural...." Based on the information contained in this article to be found on Violet Barn's website, answer the following question: An AV blossom will often have more or less petals in cooler weather?
  •  Answer: more
  • Item #5 -- There is a reprinted article titled 'AV Judging - Beginner' on the AVSA Magazine page.
List the THREE things which will disqualify (eliminate from consideration) your plant from judging.
  •  Answer: (in order found in article) 1) no variety name attached  2) evidence of insects or disease  3) suckers or secondary plants growing between the leaves
  • Item #6 -- Find a 'Silly Tip' to stimulate buds on a non-blooming violet... found on the AVSA website's FAQ section.  What is the 'Silly Tip'?
  •  Answer: Squeezing the sides of the pot
  • Item # 7 -- (extra credit)  Nancy has kept a detailed, engaging journal of her 'Growing To Show' experiences over the past three years.  After her club's show in April of 2007, she planned to close the journal.  Did Nancy stop adding new entries after the April 2007 show?  answer 'yes' or 'no'
  •   Answer:  No
  • Item #8 -- (extra credit) Our 'real' off-MSN website (http://www.violetvoice.com) belongs to FOUR webrings.  Three are obviously shown at the bottom of the page when you visit the website: Top 100 AV Links, Saintpaulia Webring, and African Violets TopSites List.  Name the fourth webring!  (Hint: The fourth is found only by following a link!)
  • Item #9 -- (extra credit) Our Group has a TradesWantedFAVS messageboard.  Post at least ONE of the following to that board:
    • Your top 5 favorite varieties
    • Your 'most wanted' varieties
    • Your 'for trade' varieties
  •  Answer: To receive a credit for this item on your final list of FOUND items, there must be a post to the TradesWantedFAVS from you.
