| How to Select & Grow African Violets and Other Gesneriads by Theodore James Jr. This is a soft cover book (paperback) of 144 pages. It is the same size as an AVSA magazine although thicker. Mr. James writes in a matter of fact style -- no personal comments or stories here -- just good information. This is a very appealing book because more than half of it consists of color photographs and there are many diagrams throughout the book as well, good for people who like to "look at the pictures"! Contents: 1. Queen of Houseplants 2. African Violet Basics -
Soil or Planting Medium - discussion of various potting mixes, soil ph, how to make and pasteurize your own mix. -

Lesser Known Varieties - a list of the rarer types of gesneriads. This book is often available on Ebay and at used book stores for only a few dollars. I think it is well worth picking up at that value, it covers a little bit of everything you need to know to raise beautiful African Violets and gives you a little taste of the "other" gesneriads as well.
